New Dawn Fades The Lowry 2nd- 4th March 2026

QUAY THEATRE LOWRY SALFORD.MARCH 2ND 2026.
Opening night buzzed with unmistakable excitement. Crowds filled the foyer in a warm, steady hum, and among them moved legendary former members of The Fall — quiet, unassuming, and almost unnoticed at first. They were reserved, warm, and entirely approachable, stopping for photos and shaking hands with fans who were clearly delighted to meet them. It was genuinely heartwarming to witness.
Producers Nigel Carr and Tony Davidson were equally welcoming, chatting with audience members, greeting press, and setting a relaxed, open tone for the evening.
Watching New Dawn Fades for the first time turned out to be far more powerful than I expected. From the moment I took my seat, the walk‑in music set the tone for a re‑energised production by Nigel and Tony, written by Brian Gorman. The show charts the rise of Joy Division from Manchester’s punk scene, and it does so with precision and emotional weight.
The audience was as mixed as it was captivated — Gen Z through to Gen X — and the theatre was full.
The production was sharp, intriguing, and deeply affecting. The stage design was sparse, but it didn’t need embellishment; the actors carried the entire world of the story with them. Their performances struck a perfect balance of narrative, theatre, and live music, capturing the mannerisms and presence of Joy Division with uncanny accuracy.

The second half was especially spellbinding. The theatre fell into a silence so complete you could have heard a pin drop. It hit hard in all the right places — sad, poignant, and painfully real. The cast pulled it off with remarkable precision. Josh Lonsdale, who played the lead, mimicked Ian Curtis so perfectly that it became more than a strong performance — it was a brilliant and eerily accurate portrayal.
This was Mancunian storytelling at its finest: raw, unfiltered, foul language and all. Beautifully crafted, beautifully performed, and a fitting tribute to a legendary band.
